Some Database entries that I think are probably wrong. I do not own these tapes and can only go by info on the covers. We all know how unreliable cover-text can be, so I’ll try to give detailed reasons for why I think corrections are necessary. I would like to ask the submitters for confirmation or the admins for opinions on the following issues:

1. 6 blondjes op de Tiroler toer (Arpa Video) DONE
I think this entry is linked to the wrong film. It should be 'Sechs Schwedinnen auf der Alm' and not 'Sechs Schwedinnen von der Tankstelle'.
a) Both titles are from the same series, so they can easily be confused. The Cover uses the German Poster for '... auf der Alm', and also has this title mentioned on the right. The Poster uses an image of Brigitte Lahaie, even though she does not actually appear in the film. (Since she does in '...von der Tankstelle' this might have influenced the contributor.)
b) This edition is listed in the OFDb as '... auf der Alm', as is a later DVD release, which uses the same title and cover image.
c) I cannot really understand dutch, but the plot mentions 'testament' as well as several other words similar to German expressions, which fit the plot description on tv-kult.com; mainly that 6 Swedish girls travel to Switzerland to accept their inheritance of their deceased father.
The correct IMDb link is: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0086267
(I have recently added several films of the same type as 'Comédie' and 'Erotique', usually there exists both a softcore and a hardcore version of these films, according to OFDb, this particual edition is the hardcore version, so 'Porn' might also be an appropriate genre.)

2. Sous l'empire de la haine (Open Video) DONE
I think this entry is linked to the wrong film. I think it should be 'Kareteci kiz' (IMDb) instead of 'Seni sevmek kaderim'(IMDb).
a) I recently added Golden Karate Girl (Eagle 6) to the database and only afterwards, when checking the director's link, noticed the french tape. I believe both tapes are from the same film. They have very similar credits (notably all 3 people mentioned on the cover were involved in both productions), so they are easily confused. Both IMDb and OFDb mention the existence of a French master/VHS for 'Karate Girl', sadly without further information. If a French tape is known that well, it seems likely one of your users would already have submitted it to the database.
b) According to Google 'Seni sevmek kaderim' translates to 'Destined to Love you', which seems odd, considering the plot description on the cover. 'Karateci kiz', which is 'Karate Girl' seems much more fitting for the cover.
c) The plot on the French cover matches with the Reviews on IMDb of 'Karate Girl', mainly that 5 convicts kill a gardener, and his daughter learns Martial Arts to take vengeance.
Sinematurk.com has a completely different plot for 'Seni sevmek kaderim' about a lawyer getting married.

3. MTV Closet Classics (Vestron Video) DONE
I think this release is from Great Britain, not from Germany.
a) The tape has UK rating logos, the 'Universal' U is a BBFC rating, the German FSK equivalents would be 'FSK 0' (previously 'ohne Altersbeschränkung'). Also the text is in English, which is rare on German releases.
b) A search on amazon.de only lists the UK tape (and the Japanese Laserdisc).
c) I am aware that is is/was a common practise for some German/International labels to distribute non-German releases of Music/Concert Videos in Germany (for example 'VPS' distributed some UK pre-cert Concert cartons from 'VCL'), sometimes even in the same packaging, however in most cases at least a sticker for the German title and/or the German rating are added. This compilation might have been released in Germany like this, but since the cover was clearly made for the UK, I would list it as a British tape.

4. Flight 90 : Disaster on the Potomac (Films International) DONE
I think this release is from Belgium, not the Netherlands.
a) It says 'Distributie bij N.V. Torcq Belgie' on the back cover.
b) I recently added 3 releases from the same label to the Database. Since the covers from Sole Survivor and Mister Deathman explicitly mention 'Belgian Law' as well as Anterwerpen, I listed the editions as Belgian.
c) I do not know if these tapes were actually (also) released in the Netherlands, but it seems very likely they were released in Belgium and think they should all be listed under one label.

5. V.R.O / VFO / Video Releasing Organization / Video Film Organisation / Video Network / Telion Film en Video / Broadway Film / Picturemedia / LVC / VCD / Valiant / Cavalcade ... DONE
This is not a correction, since I don't know what is 'right'. Last fall someone on the pre-cert forums tried to explain exactly how these labels were connected, but I forgot.
You currently have the following labels listed with releases: V.R.O. (UK), Video Releasing Organization (UK), Video Film Organization (UK) and Video Releasing Organization (NL).
I am confused, because I do not see the difference between 'V.R.O. (UK)' and 'Video Film Organization (UK)' (should these be merged?) and the dutch tapes under 'Video Releasing Organization' actually say 'Video Network' on the covers.
I have now submitted three dutch silver releases, which have 'Video Releasing Organization' on the front, 'V.R.O.' on the spine and Telion/Broadway on the back. I have chosen the 'Video Releasing Organization (NL)' label, but since they are very different from the ones already listed there, I'm not sure if that is correct.

It is even more complicated on the pre-cert database. They currently have the following labels listed, which all use the same design and catalogue numbers on some of their releases:
VRO (Video Network), VRO (Broadway), VRO (Valiant), VRO (Cavalcade), VRO (LVC), VFO (Video Network), Video Film Organisation, LVC, VCD and probably some more

Hej 8537935!

Thanks a lot for pointing out these issues! I think you're right in every respect... we're going to correct them!

2. Sous l'empire de la haine (Open Video) is very surprising since Throma -the guy who submitted the scan- indicated the right title in his review for Psychovision!

5. Finding the right label can sometimes be a pain in the a**, especially when it had several distributors or when the name slightly changed... Anyway, our listing is obviously wrong and we're gonna change that too!

Thanks again 8537935!

8-)

Thanks for fixing all the issues I mentioned.

Yes, distributor listings can be very confusing, all the (film) databases I know of struggle with that. The company names are often spelled/displayed differently across releases and some companies used numerous sub-labels that were all connected. Not to mention that (video) rights often change(d) hands and entire publishers are bought and sold, switching the labels around and making it difficult to determine which belong together. IMDb used to be a proper mess with distributors (original guidelines were that a new listing for each spelling should be created), it has gotten a little better (easier to use) but there are still many mistakes and multiple entries if a company changed its name. Many label listings found in collectors forums are also disputed, since people disagree which releases belong together.
For used submitted content there only seem to be two working models: discuss / analyse the company credits for popular titles at length and ignore the rest (discogs would be an example) or let the users enter their own spelling and offer a search instead of hard-links for distributors (as done on OFDb).
With video releases I personally struggle especially if both the rights holder / production company and the distribution company have their name or logos prominently displayed on the cover. I know I have made several wrong / disputable entries in this regard.
Going forward a nice addition for VHSDb.org would probably be to allow linking multiple labels on a release and make a field for some description and links on the distributor pages, to show which labels are connected.

The whole VRO issue seems a little more complicated than usual though. If I remember correctly it was kind of a network where video rights holders and publishers came together to license titles easily across labels. Some used the VRO artwork, label and cat. numbers, others didn't. Anyway, I think the V.R.O. (Video Releasing Organization) listing, which is now used, works just fine.

On that note, and extending earlier question about non-latin-script titles, here's another recommendation:

6. Xphema video
I would recommend changing the name of this publisher to Hrisma Video.
The original name is spelled ΧΡΗΣΜΑ ΒΙΝΤΕΟ (and ΧΡΗΣΜΑ VIDEO LTD on some covers), which according to ISO 843 transliterates to Chrisma Video. However, the Hrisma Video spelling seems more widespread. That name is used for the IMDb listing as well as Miltos’ thread in the Cinehound Greek VHS Room here.
A quick google search finds VHSdb and OFDb entries as well as ~5 blog posts for Xphema video, nothing matching for Chrisma Video and apart from IMDb clones and cinehound reposts only ~2 entries for Hrisma Video. So an argument can be made that Xphema is more common and even if changed, new entries might still be submitted as Xphema if the user prefers 'Greeklish' and doesn’t check for romanized spellings of the publisher. However, I think correct romanization of labels is preferable, which is what I used it for Spentzos Video and Alexandros Video.

Not sure if that's what you mean but you can find all the releases that are listed for a particular film by clicking on its title in the "Film" section...

Yes, that would be very interesting!

Well, then I think we can trust Miltos on that point!

;)

No, I meant that when you add/edit a certain release, you can add two, not one label to that particular tape. It should then appear in both Publisher lists.
I didn't really want to make any suggestions for the technical site of the database in this thread, it was just a thought off the top of my head, since one could have used it for the V.R.O. titles: both UK titles could additionally have the Video Network label and the Dutch ones could use Telion and Broadway Films respectively.
Obviously that is not needed on most releases and it might be problematic to implement, but I think it could help on some of the more complicated cases. Here are some examples, where I would have used that feature on my recent submissions:
Heavy Traffic: Thorn Emi Video & MTC Video
The Perfect Murder: VideoSonic & RCA / Columbia Pictures
House of Death: Metromedia Producers & Video For Pleasure
Rabbit Terror: CNR Video & MGM/UA Home Video
Django the Runner: Blaupunkt Video Club & Video For Pleasure

Like I said, just a thought - I’m sure you have other, more important things to work on.

You're right once again: it's not always easy to find out which one is the label and which one is the distributor when there are several names on a cover! Maybe your idea would be the best one but only Kubiak can decide whether 'tis possible...

;)
